Cafe To Cafe: Limited Shirts Available

/ 7.5.13 /

With 45 participants, the 2013 Cafe To Cafe registrations alone raised $835 for Amirah! I have yet to calculate the profits raised from the initial T-Shirt sales, but I'm will to bet it's roughly $75 (as I'm not charging an arm and a leg for the shirt)... but, I'd reeeeeally like the combines number to exceed $1000 when I cut Amirah a check... So...

Due to an overwhelming demand, I've had a small handful of C2C shirts made for all you wonderful people looking to both dress sharp and donate money to a great cause! Email patrickcochran@me.com if you're interested... Here's what I've got available:

ABOUT:
The PastryWeight | Cafe to Cafe (or C2C) ride was born out of love for cycling and coffee. Traversing through both suburban Greater-Boston and North Shore roads, the C2C links two of Massachusetts most respected and well known cycling cafes, Seaside Cycle & Ride Studio Cafe, together into one metric century. The C2C has been carefully planned out to create a route that is direct, diverse, fun... and at times, a little something tossed in to get the heart rate up.

PastryWeight is also pleased to announce that we will be partnering with a wonderful local organization, Amirah, for the C2C. Amirah (www.amirahboston.org) is a non-profit organization located in the Boston area dedicated to providing effective, whole person aftercare for survivors of modern day slavery. 100% of the C2C registration fees will be donated directly to Amirah and will aid in their vision of providing a safe place for healing, restoration, and re-integration for women affected by human trafficking.

** Free drip coffee will be provided at both Seaside and RSC... espresso and all other drinks will not. **

I've been watching some of the footage from the Cyclocross World Championships in Louisville and it's hilarious to see how many time my friends and I pop up in the crowd. At minute 2 in the clip below, draped in red/white/blue, lower left corner...

From The Sidelines: 2013 Retrospective

/ 8.1.13 /
Due to my clavicle injury, I did not race cross this past season... however, that didn't stop me from enjoying myself. With a little motivational help from Chris, I attended as many races as possible this past year, and I captured enough memories to tide me over until 2013/14 starts up. Though I've already posted most of these both here and on various other websites, I figured I'd give one last hurrah and post my favorites from the last 4 months... enjoy.

In an effort to promote the social rides that will be featured during the 2013 season, I've decided that each month ECV will be announcing said ride with an iconic photo... starring one or more of the ECV Officers.  To kick things off...

XMas Eve Ride | 2012

/ 28.12.12 /
Got out for a lovely 60+ mile ride with some friends on Christmas Eve. Starting out at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, we made our way on through some of the best (and worst) roads in Beverly Farms, Manchester, Magnolia, Gloucester, and Rockport. I'm not going to lie to you and say that I was in proper shape for this journey... I may or may not have needed to be dragged most of the way by Alex and Nick... but I think we can all agree that the 5hrs in the saddle with 35-40 degree weather and serious headwinds was made worthwhile by our stop at Helmut Strudels. All-in-all, it was a lovely morning and I sincerely hope it turns into a North Shore tradition.

Remember that time I got dropped from the group and lost in the woods on Thanksgiving?

Jordan's Bike

/ 16.11.12 /
Met up with Jordan yesterday for some coffee & conversation. Had a good 45min discussion that included riveting topics like handlebar drops (shallow vs anatomic), seatpost vibration dampening, shifter cable routing, mini-v brakes, and Ben Wolfe's pelvis. Oh, and I almost forgot... she rode in on a f'ing Richard Sachs:

The upcoming Cafe to Cafe ride will include a stretch of unpaved road, reminiscent of spring classics like Roubaix and Flanders. To get yourself mentally prepared for the pain you're going to have to deal with, here's an iOS wallpaper with some pavé... Click here to Download.

1971 Raleigh Record SS Conversion

/ /
A few years back, my grandmother had asked me to help clean out her basement... and being a good grandson I obv agreed to assist. While down there I found a plethora of cool trinkets; vintage lamp made of brass and marble, box of old matchbox cars, a dead bat. But out of the corner of my eye I spotted this mustard yellow tube under a pile of boxes. Assuming it was some sort of old rake or shovel that could assist me with the cleanup, I reached for it... but it didn't budge... so I carefully moved the boxes away.

Rewind 35+ years. My uncle Dan was in law school in Utah and lived quite a distance from the nearest bus stop. Having little money to pay rent, let alone buy a car, Dan had but one option to resolve his transpirational woes.

Fast forward 35+ years. Moving the boxes aside... I uncover a vintage steel bike covered in dirt, dust, cobwebs, and mouse poop. Immediately a lightbulb appears above my head:

In my quiver at home I have a full carbon S-Works Tarmac, a bright pink limited edition Crux, and a 29er... none of which are great "let me take a ride to the café and leave my bike leaning up against a brick wall" type of bikes... so why not build a SS conversion!?

Once cleaned of all its dirt/dust/webs/poop, it seems that uncle Dan had purchased a 1971 Raleigh Record. The wheels were taco'd, the drivetrain was rusted out, and the rest of the components were junk (according to todays standards)... but the frame seemed perfectly fine. So, I stripped it.

Fast forward again to the present day. After a bit of research, it seems that I've stumbled upon one of the handmade lugged Nottingham frames... IE: NOTHING is a standard shape or size and NOTHING on this bike is still being mass produced in 2012. But this wasn't going to stop me. I bought some new, used, and NOS components... stopped by my LBS... and here you go:
